Pierre-Samuel DU PONT DE NEMOURS (1739–1817). P.A.S., Paris, 6 Brumaire XI (28 October 1802); 1 folio page, revenue stamp.
Certificate attesting to the itinerary of citizen Jacques Dounous, who, having left Saint-Domingue in 1793, sought ‘necessary refuge in the United States; he lived successively in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Little-Town, West Virginia and Kentucky, until he travelled down to Louisiana, from where he returned to New York at my invitation’. He was shipwrecked on several occasions, during which he lost his most valuable documents: ‘it was not within his power to return to France any sooner than he did’.
