Joseph LAKANAL (1762–1845), politician, member of the Convention (Ariège), organiser of public education during the Revolution. 2 autograph letters, 1803–[1844]; 1 page in-4 and half a page in-8, with addresses. 22 Brumaire XII [14 November 1803], to Nicolas Frochot, Prefect of the Seine, requesting a private audience regarding a matter ‘closely linked to the interests of public affairs’; he lists his titles: ‘of the Institut de France, of the Athénée de Paris, and professor at the École Centrale on Rue St Antoine’. [20 June 1844], to his colleague Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. Condolences on the death of his father, the naturalist Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. He was so deeply moved whilst reading his letter that ‘I would certainly have choked had I not been able to shed copious tears. I had not wept for 47 years, since the time of my revered mother’s death’. In ill health, he writes from his bed and is inconsolable: ‘I am losing the best and most honourable of my friends; I owed my return to France to him’... [It was thanks to his efforts that Lakanal had been able to return to France after a 22-year exile in America.] Enclosed is a booklet entitled *The Life and Works of Joseph Lakanal* and a first-day cover of the stamp bearing his likeness (2 June 1962).
