Description
Jean BALTUS (1880–1946). Letter from the artist and signed autograph manuscript, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, 29 September 1936 and undated, [to Philippe Diolé, editor of the magazine *Beaux-Arts*]; 1½ pages in-4 (with his visiting card attached), and 1¼ pages in-4. At the request of his friend Auguste Chabaud, he had the portrait he owned of Pierre Chatelet, painted by Chatelet himself, photographed: ‘I have other paintings by Chatelet, who was a friend of mine’… [This self-portrait by the Avignon painter Pierre Chatelet (1876–1936), who had recently died, was intended to illustrate the tribute paid to him by Auguste Chabaud in the 2 October 1936 issue of *Beaux-Arts*.] Although he still had his Parisian studio on Rue Guénégaud, he spent most of the year in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, ‘believing that a landscape painter must study all the seasons. ‘I no longer go to Paris, so to speak, on leave.’ He sent his text for ‘the survey on “the Craft”’, to which his friend Albert Gleizes also offered to contribute… “The craft—that is to say, the labour-intensive and meticulous aspect of painting, which must be distinguished from aesthetics—is one of the most solid foundations of this art.” He cites Turner, Van Gogh and ‘the Impressionists, who painted haphazardly’, before concluding: ‘The Salons are full of painters who know their craft, but who sometimes use it for vulgar or foolish ends, for lack of the taste fostered by culture. ”
