Description
[Paul GACHET (1828–1909), doctor and collector, patron of Van Gogh]. Collection of approximately 75 ephemera and 15 photographs, [circa 1850–1871]; in a reused cardboard slipcase. An intriguing collection of small documents. Transport invoices and waybills; business cards; bulletins from the Compagnie générale des voitures à Paris and carriage companies, including fare schedules; a lottery ticket; a theatre programme; letterheads (Residence of the Prince President of the Republic; circulars; a Legitimist image; fashion illustrations; visiting cards (including Caumont, the Emperor’s hairdresser, Dr Orfila, and the Siamese Twins); images of prize-giving ceremonies; food ration cards from the siege of Paris: bakery, butcher’s, rationing; an engraved image of ‘The Automated Writer, Draughtsman, Calculator and Musician’; etc. Some are in Gachet’s name: Swiss Post bulletins (1854), an admission card to the Masonic Conferences of the Grand Orient; appeals for contributions, accommodation vouchers and a declaration of a hunting rifle during the Paris Commune. Photographs (visiting-card size) of Napoleon III and Eugénie, Tom Pouce (Jean Hannema) with a promotional card, protagonists and those put to death during the Foederis Arca mutiny (1864, 2), a view of the Place Vendôme with the toppled column (and a pass), 2 photographs of a soldier (one of which is colourised, possibly Gachet himself), fortifications during the Siege.
