Claude MONET (1840–1926). Autograph letter, Giverny via Vernon, 27 January 1890, to Arsène Alexandre; three and a half pages, in-8, in violet ink. A very fine letter on Manet, following an article by Alexandre in *Le Paris* of 20 January, and at a time when Monet had launched a fundraising campaign to donate *Olympia* to the Louvre. ‘Yes, I naively believe that, with his great talent and all he has done for modern art, Manet is entitled to a place in the state collections, when so many second- and third-rate painters feature so prominently there, even during their lifetimes. Yes, I naively believe that he is entitled to redress, and I believe that this would be very easy if all those who wield a pen and love beauty and justice were to support the campaign we are waging on Manet’s behalf. To doubt that the state will accept our donation is to give it yet another reason to refuse. We must cast aside the hatred and the prevailing stupidity, and courageously support the great artist that Manet was; that is the only way to make the authorities think twice. One must not suppose that the subscribers are merely vulgar Impressionists, ‘failures’ as they are called, but rather the greatest and most renowned of artists; and I possess numerous letters of support which form a substantial dossier to which Messrs Larroumet, Kaempffen and others should have no choice but to bow to. So do valiantly support Manet; there can be nothing but honour in doing so.
