Claude MONET. Autograph letter, Giverny, 3 April 1899, to Arsène Alexandre; 3¼ pages, in-8 (mourning), on Giverny letterhead by Vernon Eure, stamped envelope. Concerning the preparations for the charity sale to aid the children of Sisley (who died on 29 January). Monet is actively involved in organising the ‘auction to raise funds for Sisley’s children’, which is to take place on 1 May at the Galerie Petit and will consist of the paintings left by him – unfortunately only a small number – as well as those that his friends and colleagues are willing to donate. There will be a catalogue “featuring a portrait of Sisley and reproductions of a few paintings”, and he is counting on Alexandre and Gustave Geffroy to write the foreword: “Your support, both of you, is of great importance to the success of the sale”.
