Claude MONET. Autograph letter, Giverny, 19 June 1921, to Arsène Alexandre; 5 pages, in-8 format, on Giverny letterhead by Vernon Eure, in pencil. Concerning his Water Lilies and their installation at the Orangerie. He had been slow to reply, “but now I have regained my confidence and, despite my poor eyesight, I have thrown myself passionately back into my work; I do not know what will come of it, but I am full of enthusiasm”. He had nothing but praise for the architect Louis Bonnier, but acknowledges “that he is inclined to inflate prices”; and if he recommended him to Paul Léon (Director-General of Fine Arts), it is simply because he knows of no other architect; the administration is perfectly free to approach someone else. Has Alexandre spoken to Paul Léon about the extension of the Orangerie? Monet ‘always fears the slowness of the bureaucracy. I am all the more in need of a definitive answer as I have received a serious enquiry regarding certain parts of these decorations and must make a decision, although I am doing my utmost to keep the best ones’…
