A similar work is reproduced on page 246 under no. 632 (a different patina is illustrated) Completed in 1931, *The Persistence of Memory* is one of Salvador Dalí’s most famous works and ranks among the iconic images of Surrealism. The original painting, also known as *The Soft Watches*, is now held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This bronze sculpture, designed in 1980 and cast in 1981 using the lost-wax technique, features one of the most iconic motifs from Dalí’s oeuvre. Produced in an edition of 350, accompanied by 35 artist’s proofs, the work translates the artist’s surrealist vision of time into three dimensions. Through the image of the distorted watch, which appears to be devoid of any rigidity, Dalí transforms time into an unstable, fluid and malleable substance, challenging our perception of reality and our own experience of time.
