A Paris, Chez la Veuve Girouard, 1795. 8 parts in 6 volumes in-18, contemporary speckled basane, restored ornate smooth spines, green morocco title-piece, chiselled edges, red edges, bookplate, small defect at the upper head-cap and snags at the lower edge of the first volume, some foxing not serious, minor defects at the hinges, spine of volume V very slightly cracked - Volume I (volume 1, first and second parts): xiv pp, [1 blank f.] ; [2 ff.], pp. [151]-315, 4 vignettes h-t ; Volume II (third part) : [2 ff.], 234 pp, lacking the errata leaf, 3 vignettes h-t; Volume III (fourth part): [2 ff.], pp. [261]-503, [1 f. errata], 1 vignette h-t (the pagination changes without fail from 234 to 261); Volume IV (fifth part): 267 pp, [1 blank page], 1 h-t label; Volume V (sixth part): [2 ff.], pp. [269]-575, 2 h-t labels; Volume VI (seventh and eighth parts): [2 ff.], 204 pp. ; [2 ff.], pp. [205]-374 pp, 4 vignettes h-t (repairs to title and frontispiece of vol. I, title of vol. II, one leaf of vol. VI, small tear not missing from one leaf of vol. VI). This copy has 15 vignettes instead of the advertised 16, as in almost all copies. A very rare first edition with a new title page: there are theoretically three editions, but they come from the same print run and differ only in the title page and the number of plates, which increase from 14 in editions A and B to 16 in edition C. This pornographic novel, which is part noir, was condemned to destruction in 1815. Extremely rare.
