Description
Hieronymo Natali [Nadal, Jérome]. - Evangelicae historiae imagines, Ex ordine Evangeliorum, quae toto anno in Missae sacrificio recitantur, in ordinem temporis vitae Christi digestae. Antwerp, s.n. [Martinius Nutius], 1593. In-folio bound in full overlapping vellum, author and title handwritten in full on the spine (vellum creased) - [5 ff.], title engraved by Jérome Wierx after M. de Vos, dedication to Clement VIII by the publisher Jacob Ximenez, to the reader, index, papal privilege of 14/08/1593 signed by Vestrius Barbianus. First edition - the first 2 leaves are affected by significant freckling, repair of a tear without missing 1 f. of index, small worm gallery in the upper margin throughout the work, scattered freckling. The illustrations are printed on the front pages. A conscientious Spanish reader has translated the texts on the verso of the plates opposite the commented illustration. The work contains a total of 153 burin engravings, of which 55 are signed by Hieronymus Wierix, 57 by Anton Wierix, 15 by Johannes Wierix, 2 by Ivan Wiers, 11 by Adriaen Collaert, 1 by Jan Collaert, 11 by Carol.L. van Mallery and 1 with the initial "N.", after drawings by Bernardino Passeri and Maarten de Vos. The illustration is divided into several sections representing all the scenes from the same passage in the New Testament, identified by a letter that refers to the captions below the image. It is easy to imagine the author's desire to provide the reader with a medium that is sufficiently rich in information to help him or her to focus their thoughts and develop their knowledge of biblical teaching. A close collaborator of Ignatius of Loyola, Nadal had the idea of composing the texts in this collection with the intention of having them illustrated by Flemish artists, but he died in 1580 without seeing his project come to fruition. It was not until 1586 that, under the impetus of Christophe Plantin and the editorial work of Father Ximenez, the engravings were finally begun. The work was published posthumously in 1593 by the publisher Martinius Nutius, and was granted papal privilege. Rare and complete.
