[Sergent-Marceau, Antoine Louis François Sergent, dit]. - Portraits of great men, illustrious women, and memorable subjects of France, engraved and printed in colour, dedicated to the King. Paris, Blin, [1786-1792]. In-folio bound in modern full brown morocco, the boards decorated with a large gilt frame featuring a large floral motif, with the royal arms stamped in the centre. Spine decorated with fleur-de-lys, large inner fleur-de-lys roulette, double fillet on the edges, gilt edges (binding Thierry sr. de Petit-Simier) - scattered freckles. Exceptional collection of the complete series of 192 plates published in issues drawn by Sergent (136 plates), Desfontaines (44), Naigeon (6), Le Barbier (2), Duplessis-Berteaux (2), Benard (1), and Gérard (1) and engraved by Moret (73), Sergent (50), Mme de Cernel, wife of Sergent (30), Ridé (22), L. Roger (14) and Le Coeur (3). Title with royal arms engraved in bistre and dedication, in black, engraved by Beaublé and written by Blin, publisher and intaglio printer. The 192 aquatint plates are printed in register colour, and present 96 portraits of 17th and 18th century figures with their titles and coats of arms, accompanied by 96 animated tableaux depicting a memorable action from their political, social or military life, with an explanatory text. The first plate, depicting King Louis XVI, is accompanied by an allegorical representation glorifying his role in the Independence of the United States. Antoine François Sergent (1751 - 1847) was a painter, watercolourist, draughtsman, engraver, watercolourist and writer. He also played a political role during the French Revolution. Extremely rare complete set, in a superb presentation case.
