Description
Buffon (Georges-Louis Leclerc de) General and Particular Natural History by Leclerc de Buffon. Paris, published by Dufart, printer and bookseller, Year VII. 125 volumes in-8°, contemporary cardboard binding, covered in marbled handmade paper in shades of orange, title labels printed on paper. A fine, untrimmed set; most of the volumes are uncut. The engravings are in black and in very fresh condition; very few pinholes or foxing marks throughout the set. This series contains approximately 1,000 plates, or around ten plates per volume. The first series runs from volume 1 to 64; volume 18 is missing, which covers the final part of the history of animals and the beginning of the natural history of man. Complete set of the 28 volumes devoted to birds. Next: fish (13 volumes), cetaceans (1 volume), insects and crustaceans (14 volumes), reptiles (8 volumes), molluscs (6 volumes), plants (18 volumes). This copy has not been collated. Therefore, volume 18 is missing, as are volumes 125, 126 and 127 of the analytical tables. The series is supplemented by the two volumes by M. Virey, which form a supplement to the natural history of the human race. These volumes are rarely found. That is to say, 125 volumes in uniform bindings, with some imperfections: a few title labels are damaged or missing, sometimes rewritten in pen; there are various signs of wear; and only five cap bands are damaged. A rare set in its charming period cardboard slipcase.
