Paris: Buisson, Year 5 of the Republic (1796). 2 volumes, in-8°, later (20th-century) binding in brown half-morocco with long grain and corner pieces. Smooth spines with gilt fillets, gilt author’s name and title, gilt cap letters (Bound by Huser). Spines sun-faded. Blue/grey half-leather covers and spines preserved. Collated and complete; Volume I: half-title, title, XXII pp. – pp. 23 to 286. Volume II: half-title, title, 320 pp. Untrimmed copy; one tiny hole with loss of letters on page 23 of Volume I; a few leaves are darker in colour. First edition and posthumous publication of this famous novel by the encyclopaedic philosopher.
