Rousseau (Jean-Jacques) Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality Among Men. Paris: Marc Michel Rey, 1755. 1 volume, 8vo, contemporary full brown calf binding, smooth spine with faux raised bands and gilt fleurons, title label in green morocco. Normal wear and scuffing, weakened joints, small tear at the bottom. Collated and complete: 1 blank folio – frontispiece – LXX pp., including title page, 1 folio of colophon – 262 pp., 1 folio of errata with a note to the bookbinder on the reverse – 1 blank folio. Contains the errors inherent in this first edition, as noted by Tchemerzine in his bibliography. ‘Jaques’ instead of ‘Jacques’ on the title page and on page LII of the preface; the acute accent added by hand to ‘conforme’ on page 11. The endpapers are present on pages LXVII–LXVIII, 111–112 and 139–140. The quires are in very good condition. A rare and sought-after first edition.
