Description
Guérin (F.E.) A Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History and Natural Phenomena. Paris, at the subscription office, 1834–1839. 9 tomes in 10 volumes, large quarto, contemporary binding in red long-grained Russian half-leather for the first two and fawn sheepskin for the remaining seven. Spined backs decorated with gilt title and volume numbers, gilt metalwork in the panels. Yellow edges. A composite set with very similar metalwork. A complete set in which all the plates have been hand-coloured and enhanced with gum arabic. This series is often found in black-and-white. This copy has not been collated; the series should comprise 720 plates, of which 39 are missing. All the plates are in colour, but a good half are heavily scorched.
