Marbot (François Achille) *Les Bambous*: La Fontaine’s fables, adapted into Creole patois by an old commander. Fort-Royal, Martinique: published by Ruelle and Arnaud, government printers, 1846. 1 volume, in-8°, contemporary binding in havana half-maroquin with corner pieces. (Bound by Alexis Robin, La Roche-sur-Yon) The book is dedicated ‘to those of my lovely compatriots who have not forgotten the sweet speech of our childhood’. Title page with a vignette in the centre; handwritten ex-libris in ink at the top of the title page: ‘Madame E.A.M. Fiéron, 1849’; title - 2 ff. N.c. - 140 pp. Two rubbed corners, foxing of varying severity, a small water stain in the bottom corner of the first 50 leaves. A copy that belonged to Madame Eryphile Anne Marie Pineau, who married Jacques Amédée Philippe Fiéron in 1824; he served as Governor of Guadeloupe from 1848 to 1851. An extremely rare first edition of this collection of fables, published two years before the abolition of slavery on 27 April 1848. Published anonymously. Fine provenance.
