Description
Excerpts from letters from Nubar Pasha to Mrs Nubar, 1851–1896. 3 volumes in-4°, bound in full red morocco, with a slipcase lined with suede and edged in red morocco. Spined with gilt title, date and volume number. Two gilt lines on the edges, guilloché caps, endpapers framed by three gilt lines. (Stroobants binding). A typescript on fine paper comprising over 1,200 pages divided into 3 volumes; this collection of letters spans the entire career of this great figure, who served as chief interpreter to Ismail Pasha, who conferred upon him the title of Pasha in 1863. He was Director of the Department of Public Works in 1864, before becoming Director (Minister) of Foreign Affairs in 1866. Between 1866 and 1867, Nubar Pasha secured from the ‘Sublime Porte ’ (the seat of the Ottoman government in Constantinople until 1923) several concessions: authorisation to cut through the Isthmus of Suez, recognition of Ismail Pasha as Khedive or viceroy, and the hereditary nature of the title. From 1866 to 1888, he served as Egypt’s Minister for Foreign Affairs on four occasions over a period of sixteen years. Nubar Pasha was Egypt’s first Prime Minister in 1878. His final term in office spanned the period from 16 April 1894 to 12 November 1895. He was the father of Boghos Nubar Pasha, who served as administrator of the Egyptian railways and as president of the General Armenian Charitable Union, which he founded in 1906. This entire typescript was compiled during 1923 by his son, Boghos Nubar Pasha, as stated in a foreword dated 8 February 1923. Here is a brief summary of the foreword: ‘My mother had carefully preserved most of the letters my father wrote to her during his many missions abroad. She bequeathed them to me, urging me to sort through them and reproduce those I deemed useful. It is therefore in accordance with her wishes that I have included in this collection—compiled for my own family—those pages of interest to our family or relating to the political events in which my father was involved. The issue of the Suez Canal, the securing of the Sultan’s firmans concerning the change to the order of succession to the viceroyalty, and, finally, the judicial reform… ’ It is stated that copies of this work were made solely for his own family. We then include: *My Memoirs*, Parts One and Two, by Nubar Pasha, Mohammed-Aly, Ibrahim, Abbas, Saïd and Ismaël. Paris, 1924. 2 volumes in-4°, soft binding in full havana morocco, plain spine with author and title, gilt heads. Normal wear and tear, one jaw split over 5 cm, spine slightly sun-faded. (Bound by Stroobants). Typescript compiled by his son, Boghos Nubar Pasha, based on the memoirs of his father, Nubar Pasha. Nubar Pasha’s memoirs were published in 1983 by the Librairie du Liban in Beirut, presumably based on this typescript. First volume: 344 pages plus 10 pages of tables. Second volume: 533 pages plus 19 pages of tables. And finally, we include: chronological notes 1825–1899. 2 volumes in-4°, bound in porphyry half-basane with corner pieces, ribbed spine with title labels in red morocco and gilt volume numbers, gilt headbands. (Bound by Stroobants). A typescript produced by his son, comprising approximately 600 pages, which reproduces his father’s notes almost day by day, thereby supplementing the letters to his wife collected in the first three volumes, particularly for the periods when she had joined him, which effectively brought the correspondence to a halt and created gaps in the chronology of his political activities. This constitutes a coherent and unique set of seven volumes, a work of great significance for the history of Egypt and the Armenians. An exceedingly rare set, in signed bindings and free from foxing.
