Description
Apollinaire (Guillaume) *Alcools*, poems (1898–1913). Paris, Mercure de France, 1913.
1 in-12 volume, bound in a full mosaic-patterned box, with a calfskin-edged and lined slipcase and cover. Slipcase with author’s name, title and date gilded; spine sun-faded. Exquisitely executed geometric mosaic in various colours ranging from dark brown to light green; spine with author’s name, title and date gilded; endpapers and half-leather linings in pearl grey calfskin. Covers and spine intact. Binding crafted and signed by Paul Bonet, dated 1962. Binding perfectly preserved within its slipcase. Copy on standard paper from the original edition, justified and bearing the number 565. It is said that only 567 copies were printed in addition to the 23 on Holland paper. Collated and complete: 1 blank folio followed by 20 pages, including half-title, a frontispiece by Picasso and title page. At the end, 4 unnumbered folios. A fine copy of this first edition, which remains highly sought-after. It is regarded as the manifesto of modern poetry, closely associated with Cubism and a precursor to Surrealism. Very clean and free from foxing.
