Hugo (Victor) *Les Contemplations*, Hetzel edition. Paris, Pagnerre and Michel Lévy, 1856. 2 volumes, in-8°, contemporary binding in red half-basane with corner pieces, smooth spines with decorative motifs, title and volume number labels in black basane. Normal wear and scuffing, particularly on the title labels; spines sun-faded. Ex-libris by Georges Ascoli. Covers preserved, without the spines. Good copies with a few scattered foxing spots. First edition bearing the inscription ‘Hetzel special edition for France, prohibited abroad’ on the title page and on the verso of the half-title page. One of Victor Hugo’s finest collections of poetry.
