Huysmans (Joris-Karl) *La Cathédrale*. Paris: Stock, 1898 (24 January). 1 substantial in-12 volume, in a contemporary Bradel binding in light brown half-maroquin with corner pieces, smooth spine with author’s name and title in gold, a mosaic decoration of flowers and a cross. Gilded head; the bookbinder’s mark is partially illegible, possibly ‘CH. Meunier’. Covers and spine preserved; first edition, one of 100 copies on Holland paper, this one printed for the Bernoux & Cumin bookshop. Collated and complete with the previously unpublished etched portrait of the author by Eugène Delattre and a colour frontispiece by Pierre Roche printed on églomisé paper. 488 pages plus 1 unnumbered folio. The Holland paper, specially manufactured for this edition, features a watermark depicting Chartres Cathedral. A very fine copy, free from foxing, with wide margins and the head and foot margins intact. The copy is enhanced by a small handwritten card signed by Huysmans, mounted on a tab at the beginning of the volume. ‘My dear friend. Forgive me for not having replied sooner…’ A rare and highly desirable copy.
