Chateaubriand (François-René de) – Serres (Raoul) *Les Martyrs*. Paris: La Tradition, 1942. 2 volumes, large quarto, bound in full garnet morocco leather with a half-garnet morocco slipcase featuring bands, and a edged slipcase. Covers decorated with mosaics, a frame and a crucifix in grey morocco on the front cover of each volume, with gilt and blind-stamped lines; ribbed spine decorated in the same style with the author’s name, title and date in gilt. All edges gilt on endpapers; inner covers and endpapers in garnet moiré; covers framed in morocco leather repeating the motifs on the covers. Covers and spine preserved (bound by Charles Lanoë). The bottom or top of the slipcase for Volume II is missing. Copy no. 60 on Arches vellum, with a set of all the plates bearing a note, printed in black. A very fine copy, free from foxing, illustrated with 46 colour etchings by Raoul Serres, here in double state.
