Description
France (Anatole) – Steinlen (Théophile Alexandre) *L’Affaire Crainquebille*. Paris: Edouard Pelletan, 1901. 1 volume, in-8°, bound in full orange-red morocco, with a bordered slipcase. Spine ribbed with author, title and date in gold, all edges gilt. Endpapers framed in morocco with grey moiré endpapers (Bound by G. Lagadec). Very slight wear from handling; covers and spine well preserved. First edition, printed in a run of 400 copies; this is no. 291 out of 343, printed on hand-made vellum. A very clean copy, free from foxing. The book is illustrated with 62 black-and-white compositions by Steinlen. This copy is enhanced by an original drawing on vegetable-based tracing paper in Steinlen’s purest style, unsigned, depicting the arrest of Crainquebille amidst a crowd; the drawing is in keeping with the spirit of the work but is not included amongst the illustrations comprising it. A very fine copy in a well-made binding.
