1 substantial in-4° volume, bound in full dark green morocco with a half-morocco slipcase in dark green and a edged slipcase. A large mosaic morocco decoration on the front cover depicting a vagabond on a path; on the back cover, a smaller decoration depicting a man lying in a meadow. Spined back with author, title and date in gold. All edges gilt on endpapers; grey morocco inner covers with a brown morocco ‘ronce’ mosaic; brown moiré endpapers. Covers and spine preserved (bound by Charles Lanoë). Normal wear to the slipcase; spine of the slipcase faded by sunlight. The work was printed in a run of 340 copies; this one bears no. 229 on vellum, illustrated with 252 original compositions by Steinlen. It was bound together with the same author’s ‘Dernières chansons de mon premier livre’, illustrated with 24 original compositions by Steinlen and printed in an edition of 300 copies (no. 229). This copy is supplemented by: subscription vouchers for each of the works. An original drawing signed by Lanoë, which was used to create the front cover design (at the end of the volume). And, most notably, at the beginning of the volume, a very fine original drawing in gouache and pastel (16.5 x 12.5) signed by Steinlen, depicting a vagabond by the banks of a river. An exceptional copy, free from foxing, in a well-preserved binding.
