Description
Sanson d’Abbeville (Nicolas) Duchy and Government of Brittany. 1650.
An interesting map from the mid-17th century, 42.5 x 55 cm, hand-coloured. Nicolas Sanson d’Abbeville, born in Abbeville in 1600, is regarded as one of the founders of French cartography; having been recognised by Cardinal Richelieu for his precise work, he was introduced to King Louis XIII, who appointed him Ordinary Geographer to the King. He also served as a geography tutor to Louis XIII and Louis XIV. The map is in fine condition, with a small tear at the edge.
