Description
Choquet de Lindu (Antoine). Description of the three sections of the port of Brest, constructed, drawn and engraved in 1757. Brest, printed by Malassis, 1757. Followed by: a description of the penal colony for housing galley slaves or convicts from the Brest arsenal on land. Brest, printed by Romain Malassis, 1759. 1 large in-plano volume (64 x 46), contemporary binding in cardboard covered with handmade paper, ribbed spine with visible stitching. Numerous signs of wear, top cap missing, and some losses on the covers. Collated: first volume: title page 10 pp. – 2 plates (1 and 2) 3 pp. N.C. – 6 plates (3 to 8). Second volume: title page – 4 pp. N.C. 2 engraved folios describing the plates 3 plates (nos. 9 to 11). The second volume should contain four plates. The last one is missing. Contains 11 out of 12 plates (Polak 1732). Interior in good condition with the occasional small stain in the margins; superb black-and-white fold-out plates printed on thick rag paper. The plates measure between 58 x 64 cm and 185 x 64 cm for plate no. V. A native of Brest, Choquet de Lindu (1713–1790) was a naval engineer. He was responsible for major works in his home town, including the large Pontaniou docks, the dykes and warehouses, which are depicted here in beautiful plates. Rare and spectacular.
