Description
FONTENELLE (B. le Bovier de). MISCELLANEOUS WORKS. Paris, Brunet, 1715. Four volumes in 12mo, in pale calfskin, with gold-stamped coat of arms in the centre of the covers, ornate ribbed spine, title and volume number labels, gold-filleted edges and caps, speckled edges (contemporary binding). A slight tear at the top joint of the first volume; a small black ink stain on the side edge of volume 4. NEW, expanded EDITION. Vol. I–II: New Dialogues of the Dead – Vol. III: Plato’s Judgement – Vol. IV: History of the Oracles. A BEAUTIFUL PORTRAIT of the author on the frontispiece of Vol. I, engraved on steel by Michel Dossier after Hyacinthe Rigaud. A LOVELY COPY WITH GILDED COATS OF ARMS, unidentified. A handwritten note mentions ‘The coat of arms of the Duke of Gontaut-Biron’, but this attribution does not correspond to that reproduced by OHR. ¶ Tchemerzine, III-328, which describes an edition in 8 volumes.
