[GILDED]. DANTE. INFERNO. French translation by Pier-Angelo Fiorentino, accompanied by the Italian text. P., Hachette, 1865. Large folio, ½ havana chagrin by the publisher, covers in havana-coloured grained cloth with blind-stamped borders, front cover decorated with gold lettering, spine with flat raised bands decorated with blind-stamped and gilt panels, gilt title, gilt edges (Ch. Magnier). A few faint foxing spots, mainly on the headbands. NEW EDITION, the first printing having been published by the same publisher in 1861. FRONTISPICE PORTRAIT of Dante and 75 out-of-series woodcuts, printed on tinted China paper by Gustave DORÉ; each of these plates is protected by a captioned border. ‘In no other work illustrated by Doré are there finer drawings than in this one.’ (Leblanc).
