COMPLETE AND AUTHENTIC MEMOIRS OF THE DUKE OF SAINT-SIMON on the age of Louis XIV and the Regency, published for the first time from the original manuscript written entirely in the author’s own hand. Paris, Sautelet, 1829–30. 21 volumes, in-8 ½, in havana calfskin, spines with 4 flat raised bands decorated with a gilt scroll, embossed fleurons in the compartments, large gilt scrolls at the tail, gilded garland at the head, gilded title and volume number, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Foxing, signs of wear to the bindings. AUTHENTIC FIRST EDITION, published by General de Saint-Simon after he had recovered the complete manuscript of the ‘Mémoires’, which constituted ‘the greatest publishing success since Walter Scott ’.
