BUFFON. COMPLETE WORKS. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1770–89. 51 volumes in 12mo, in marbled fawn sheepskin, with double gilt fillet framing on the covers, a smooth, compartmentalised and decorated spine, title and volume number labels in garnet morocco and black sheepskin, edges speckled in red and black (contemporary binding). Three cap bands worn down, numerous volume number labels rubbed with losses, some minor wear to the bindings. ILLUSTRATED REPRINT in 12mo format, a more manageable size, of the original 4to edition. It was produced in collaboration with Daubenton and Lacépède. It includes a PORTRAIT of Buffon as the frontispiece to Volume 1 and a large number of out-of-text ENGRAVINGS on steel, as well as maps and plans. Complete Works (13 volumes: Vol. 1–13) – Birds (16 volumes: Vol. 1–16) – Minerals (9 volumes: Vol. 1–9) – Quadrupeds (12 volumes: Vol. 1–12) - Table of Contents (1 volume). From the LIBRARY of the Marquis DADVISARD, with a heraldic bookplate pasted to the inside front cover of each volume. A GOOD COPY, with a fresh block, in uniform binding.
