Description
LHUER (Victor). Costumes of Auvergne and Bourbonnais. Preface by Mrs Y. H. Monceau. Paris, Arc-en-Ciel, (1941), In-4, 6 unnumbered folios: title page, preface and table of contents – 48 plates. Loose sheets, in a laced folder illustrated with two coats of arms in colour. – A fresh copy. First edition of this remarkable series of 48 drawings coloured by the Ranson Fils workshops. Each plate, depicting one or two subjects, bears the date and place of the field survey, as well as a brief description. The Museum of Folk Arts and Traditions undertook the project of compiling a collection of all the traditional costumes of Europe. This catalogue began with France, and the first provinces to be featured were Auvergne and Bourbonnais. Many of the costumes depicted belonged, incidentally, to the Moulins Museum of Folklore and to Madame Monceau, with whom Lhuer stayed whilst producing his drawings. The vast project was never completed, and only a few provinces were published (including Brittany). Printed in a run of 1,000 copies, this series has become rare.
