MENDES (Catullus) [SCHWABE (Carloz)]. Hesperus. Colour illustrations by Carloz Schwabe. Paris, Société de Propagation des Livres d’Art, 1904, in-4. 96 pp. – 2 ff. – 12 plates included in the pagination, headpieces, tailpieces and ornamentation. Full bottle-green morocco, 2 ornamental Art Nouveau-style metal cabochons set on the cover, title running vertically on the spine in lead letters of the same style, water-green leather endpapers, double endpapers of ‘wiped’ paper, gilt head, original cover preserved. (S. Noël). An amateur binding of very fine workmanship. In very fresh condition. Edition printed in a run of 520 copies. List of members of the Société de Propagation des Livres d’art bound at the front. This magnificent book is one of the jewels of Art Nouveau illustration. The cover features a large floral design in shades of pink and green on a dark background, dotted with golden stars. The inset illustrations are carefully coloured using stencils in pastel shades, with silver highlights on the frontispiece. Each chapter is preceded by a title page adorned with a large floral motif, printed in two colours; the headbands and footers are printed in bistre.
