Description
DELARBRE (Antoine). A Zoological Treatise, or Natural History of Wild Quadrupeds and Native Birds; of those that are merely migratory or appear rarely; and of the fish and amphibians observed in the former province of Auvergne. Clermont-Ferrand, Beauvert, Deschamps, 1797; 8vo. 1 unnumbered folio – 346 pp. (erroneously numbered 348). Fawn half-basane, spine with raised bands decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, marbled edges. (19th-century binding). – A fine copy. However, 4 ff. are fragile due to the thinness of the paper. A very rare first edition. Each animal is described in one to two pages, with ornithology taking up the largest proportion. Of note: the wolf – ‘in harsh winters, they have been seen coming down from the mountains and approaching the gates of Clermont’.
