Description
HUGO (Count Joseph-Leopold-Sigisbert). Memoirs of General Hugo, Governor of several provinces and Assistant Major-General of the armies in Spain. Paris, Ladvocat, 1823; 3 volumes in-8, paperback. 1 f.-292 pp. – CII-388p. 2 ff.-480 pp. Covers of mottled beige handmade paper, labels on the spines, entirely untrimmed. A copy as published, in fresh condition, but to which General Aubertin’s Memoirs—175 pages that should appear at the beginning of the first volume—have not been appended; consequently, the first volume begins directly with the running title ‘Memoirs of General Hugo’ (sic). (Collection of the Memoirs of the Marshals of France and French Generals). First edition. The famous memoirs of the poet’s father focus primarily on Napoleonic Italy and the Spanish War. The first volume recounts the War in the Vendée, the campaign of Year VIII, then Italy and Fradiavolo; it concludes with reflections on military art and medicine. The second volume contains the “Historical Summary of the Events that Led Joseph Napoleon to the Spanish Throne…” (102 pages) before continuing with the Spanish War; the third volume contains the account of the siege of Thionville, which had previously been published separately. (Tulard, 712 – Vicaire IV, col. 225 – Quérard IV, p. 157).
