Description
[LOUIS XVIII]. Account of a journey to Brussels and Koblenz (1791). Paris, Domère, 1823, in-16, 139 pages. Bound in bottle-green half-maroquin, with corners, ribbed spine and gilt head. (19th-century binding). – Slight scuffing and some discolouration to the binding, scattered small foxing spots, a faint stain on the title page (discolouration caused by a bookmark). Ten editions of this account of Monsieur’s escape were published in the same year. (Barbier IV, 201). - [ROQUELAURE (Gaston-Jean-Baptiste)] (1617–1676). Amusing Adventures of the Duke of Roquelaure. Based on the Memoirs which the Author found in the Cabinet of the Marshal d’H... Paris, Tiger, (c. 1780); in-16, 111 pp. (pagination errors). – Frontispiece. Red half-shagreen, ribbed spine. (19th-century binding). - Engraved ex-libris: Ex musaeo Elz. Pin. A fresh copy. Engraved frontispiece in intaglio, showing the Duke in an alcove, gazing at two cradles. The Duke of Roquelaure (1617–1676), nicknamed ‘the ugliest man in France’, nevertheless enjoyed a strong popular reputation as a jester, cheerful and obscene. This collection of licentious jokes, undoubtedly apocryphal, was published in Cologne in 1727. It also belongs to the Bibliothèque Bleue (Nisard I, 231 – Oberlé, Cat. 20, describes prints from Rouen and Evreux, early 19th century).
