CASTILHON (Jean-Louis). Considerations on the Physical and Moral Causes of the Diversity of Genius, Customs, and Government amongst Nations. Drawn in part from an anonymous work. Bouillon, Published by the Société Typographique, Paris, Lacombe, 1769, in-8, XIX-579 pp. – 1 f. Bound in fawn-coloured veal with natural grain, ribbed spine, compartments with gilt fillets adorned with gilt palmettes and fleurons, red edges. (Contemporary binding). - Label from the Lyon bookseller Los-Rios (1780). Front endpaper partly detached, spine slightly sun-faded, lower cap rubbed; the interior of the volume is fresh. First edition dedicated to Turenne. “Drawn in part from the work of the Abbé d’Espiard [de La Borde], this work is an essay in comparative sociology of ancient and modern populations, containing, amongst other things, some anthropological data. Castilhon concludes: ‘Every state has its own customs, and these customs are distinct from those of the nation. The customs of a state depend on its maxims’. (Unpublished 998).
