Description
LOUVET de COUVRAY (Jean-Baptiste). *Les Amours du chevalier de Faublas*. Third edition, revised by the author. Paris, published by the author, Rue de Grenelle, and available from booksellers, Year VI (1798), 4 volumes in-8, XVI pp. – 244 pp. – 2 unnumbered folios – 274 pp. – 2 uncut leaves – 307 pp. – 2 uncut leaves – 330 pp. – 27 separate engravings. Bound in glossy khaki half-calf, with friezes and broad fillet work, title labels, marbled edges. (19th-century bindings). – This copy features the engraving of Mme Gérard in place of that of Quéverdo in Volume I, but in Volume III, the engraving by Dutertre (more common) appears in place of that by Marillier. - A burn mark in the margin of the first 30 leaves of Volume I, repaired by the bookbinder, with persistent brown stains; the rest of the volumes are in good condition, the paper fresh, the margins satisfactory and the bindings well-preserved. 27 charming engravings by Demarne; Dutertre; Mme Gérard; Marillier; Monsiau and Monnet, engraved by various artists. Under the specious pretence of satirising the foibles of his time, Louvet presents in his *Faublas* fantastical plots, featuring scenes of romance that are free-spirited and at times comic (Cohen, col. 660 – Pia, *Dictionnaire des Œuvres érotiques*, p. 23).
