VARILLAS (Antoine). History of Louis XI. Paris, Claude Barbin, 1689, 2 volumes in-4, 34 unnumbered folios–481 pp. - 2 unnumbered folios–358 pp.–178 pp. Contemporary bindings in mottled fawn calfskin, ribbed spines, decorated panels, title labels, marbled edges. The interior of the volumes is in satisfactory condition despite a few scattered foxing spots or stains. Caps worn down, hinges split (seams of the covers not stretched), corners bumped. Antoine Varillas, historiographer to Gaston d’Orléans and librarian at the Royal Library, was born in Guéret in 1624. Rich headbands engraved by Le Sueur, a few wood-engraved tailpieces.
