Description
[MAUBERT de GOUVEST]. The Political Testament of Cardinal Jules Alberoni. Compiled from various memoirs, letters and conversations of His Eminence. By Monsignor A.M. Translated from the Italian by C. de R.B.M.
Lausanne, Bousquet, 1753, in-12, XXX pp. – 460 pp. Marbled fawn calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, red edges. (Contemporary binding). - Capitals rubbed, binding slightly worn, interior fresh.
First edition. This text is apocryphal. This ‘Testament’, a historical form then in vogue, is modelled on those of Richelieu, Mazarin, Colbert and Louvois. Voltaire praised it. (Cioranescu II, 43787 – entry by Quérard in *Supercheries I*, 233). Quérard describes at length the two attributions based on Gaullieur and Auguis. As for Alberoni (1664–1752), an agent of the Duke of Parma, he played an important role in the affairs of the War of the Spanish Succession before becoming a minister to Philip V.
