Description
PETRONE – NODOT. Petrone in Latin and French. A complete translation, based on the manuscript found in Belgrade in 1688. With several notes and additions not included in the first edition. New Edition. Expanded to include Petrone’s Counter-Critique. Amsterdam, Published by the Company, 1756, 2 volumes in-12, 2ff.-XLIX-1f.-383pp. - 2ff.-293pp. - 2ff.-125pp. for the ‘Counter-Critique’ – 10 plates. Rooted fawn calfskin, ornate ribbed spine, red title labels, red edges. (Contemporary bindings). - Paper very slightly yellowed. Minimal imperfections. Latin text and translation in parallel columns. Two of the ten intaglio engravings are folded. One of the three poems in honour of the translator (who is named in the Preface) is signed Santeuil. The ‘new fragments’, published separately in 1693, are printed here in ‘round letters’ and incorporated into the Latin text. The ‘Belgrade manuscript’, which is said to have revealed these fragments, is regarded as apocryphal, and many critics have attributed it to Nodot himself. In his counter-critique, the translator argues that his lack of proficiency in Latin prevented him from producing a credible pastiche, and the so-called Petronian fragments may in fact belong to Linage de Vaucienne, assisted by Nicolas Chorier. (See Petrequin, *Nouvelles recherches historiques et critiques sur Petrone*, 1869). – (Brunet IV, 576 – Barbier III, 864 – Supercheries III, 90 – Gay-Lemonnyer III, 721).
