Description
JOANNET (Claude) (1716–1789). The Best-Known Animals. Essays.
Paris, Costard, 1770, 2 volumes in-12, XXXVI–356 pp.–2ff. 2ff.-478pp.-1f. Bound in fawn-coloured grained calfskin, spine ribbed and decorated with gold-lined panels, gold-embossed palmettes and fleurons, title labels, marbled edges. (Contemporary bindings). A tear to one cap, the paper slightly and uniformly yellowed, more so in a few quires.
Claude Joannet, born in Dôle in 1716, died in Paris in 1789, was for a time a Jesuit. An opponent of philosophers, he refutes here the *Philosophical Essay on the Soul of Animals* by the Protestant D.-R. Boullier and argues, in line with Descartes, that animals are mere machines. The running title is: *Principles of Movement in Animals*. This work is also found under a slightly different title, at the same publisher’s, in the same year: “Animals Better Understood, or The Pros and Cons of the Soul in Animals”. These appear to be the only editions. (Quérard IV, p. 225 – Conlon XVI, 70.1034).
