Portrait engraved by Daulé after Vivien. First collected edition of the works of Chancellor d’Aguesseau (1668–1751), compiled by his secretary, the Abbé André. The Chancellor’s works are of paramount importance for the political and legal history of the late 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. D’Aguesseau advocated the unification of case law in matters governed by written law, anticipating the drafters of the Civil Code. His campaign against Law’s system, which led to his exile, is also well known. Volume 13 is often missing. (Dupin, 1349 – Brunet I, 468).
