Paris, Sourdon, (1808), folio, 1f. ‘Preliminary Introduction’ – frontispiece & 37 folios mounted on tabs in the centre. Publisher’s binding in fawn half-basane, with a medallion on the cover bearing the title and the bookbinder’s signature. (Meslant). – The title page is missing. The plates are in good condition. Binding is loose, upper hinge torn over 8 cm, edges rubbed. Fourth edition of this famous atlas, adorned with a frontispiece engraved by Moisy depicting The Napoleonic Festivities from 1796 to 1806. This plate was omitted from printings produced after the Restoration. The name ‘A. Le Sage’, under which this work was published, is not thought to be a pseudonym for the Count of Las-Cases, but rather the name of a French priest who had taken refuge in England, or of an Irish priest from whom Las-Cases is said to have purchased the work. Published in eight instalments of four maps or plates, *L’Atlas historique* was expanded until 1826. Each owner of the work could update their copy by purchasing the new maps. A total of 39 plates were published. This copy, whose plates are addressed to Didot the Elder, 1806, contains the Supplementary Sheet… for 1825; the Russian Empire in Europe and Asia (1807); Historical World Map (1808); Modern Europe; Political Europe in 1826 (map XXX bis); Historical, Physical and Political America in 1825 (XXXIII bis); Special Historical and Geographical Map of the United States of North America (supplementary map no. 34). - In total, 24 maps in one-third plate size, surrounded by dense text. Maps and blocks of text enhanced with watercolour. (Quérard IV, p. 586 ff. provides a detailed description of this work). - DUSSIEUX.
