Description
FREZIER (Amédée François). A Treatise on Fireworks, in which we see: I. How to prepare the materials used in the composition of fireworks. II. The method of making and composing all kinds of fireworks. III. An overview of the conduct of celebratory fireworks displays.
The Hague, J. Neaulme, 1741; in-12. 2 ff.—Frontispiece—XVIII—394 pp.—3 ff. (table of contents) 8 folding plates. Brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, blonde title label. Corners slightly scuffed. Handwritten ex-libris on the title page. A fine copy.
A counterfeit of the original edition published in 1707, featuring three intaglio headpieces and complete with all eight plates.
In the preface written by the author for the 1747 edition, he explains that the fireworks display of 1739 rekindled the public’s enthusiasm for pyrotechnics. As his *Treatise* was out of print, a bookseller asked him to undertake a new edition of the work. In 1741, a new edition had appeared in The Hague, but without his authorisation.
Frezier was a polymath: mathematician, architect, cartographer, entomologist and botanist; he brought back from a journey to Chile the *Fragaria chiloensis*, which, when crossed with *Fragaria virginiana* (wild strawberry), gave rise to *Fragaria ananassa*, our cultivated strawberry.
