Description
GRENIER (Nicolas). The Shield of the Faith, in the form of a dialogue drawn from Holy Scripture, the Holy Fathers and the earliest Doctors of the Church, dedicated to the most Christian King Henry, the second of that name, newly revised and expanded by the author. Paris, Jean André, 1548; small 8vo. 16 ff.–247 f° (incorrectly numbered as 249) [a–aviii, eviii–zviii, A–Hvii]. The white endpapers are missing. Title page adorned with an engraved border by Denis Janot. Jean André’s mark on the last leaf. Contemporary brown calfskin, with gilt fleurons at the corners and in the centres of the covers, and cold-stamped fillet borders. Some scuffing and areas where the leather is missing. Handwritten ex-libris and a small ink stain on the title page. This fierce attack on the Reformation had already been published by the same bookseller in 1547. (P. Renouard, Parisian Printers and Booksellers of the 16th Century. Volume I. Abada-Avril, Paris, 1964, no. 195). (18)
