Description
COSTES (Roger). *Harmonia mensurarum, sive analysis & synthesis per rationum et angulorum mensuras promatæ*: with additional mathematical treatises.
Cambridge, Robert Smith, 1722. [20], 249–125 pp. – 1 folding plate. Figures in the text. Full calf, ribbed spine. Binding restored (covers and spine re-glued).
“Roger Cotes (1682–1716) published only one scientific paper during his lifetime, and this work is therefore the principal record of his mathematical achievements. He worked with Isaac Newton on the preparation of the second edition of Newton’s *Principia Mathematica* (published in 1713). According to Auguste de Morgan, *Harmonia Mensurarum* is ‘the first work in which decisive progress was made in the application of logarithms and the properties of the circle to the calculation of fluxions’, and includes the first version of the Newton–Cotes formulas, the first introduction of Euler’s formula and the ‘Côté theorem’ in trigonometry. Cotes died of a fever in 1716 at the age of just 33.”
