Description
13- CICERO: ‘Opera Ciceronis Rhetorica, Oratoria, & Forensia... ’ Paris, Jean Petit. Sold by Iodoco Badio and Ioanni Paruo, followed by: ‘M. Tullii Ciceronis Orationes...’, 1531 (colophon). 2 parts in a very small folio volume, Latin text. Two wood-engraved title pages, the first printed in red and black, each adorned with an elegant Renaissance architectural portico, embellished with medallions and bearing Jean Petit’s printer’s mark in the centre. Distinctive feature of this copy: three small crow’s heads were originally drawn in brown ink within the lower medallion of each of the two title pages (the coat of arms of the Machault family). The collation is complete and conforms to the reference copies held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France: 1 blank folio, 8 unnumbered folios, unnumbered, 134 ff. numbered in Arabic numerals, followed by 12 ff. unnumbered and 298 ff. numbered in Roman numerals. Initial letters. Binding probably from the 16th century, the covers framed with blind-stamped lines and a small embossed iron in the centre (scuffs and losses). Spine worn. Early handwritten marginal annotations. Early handwritten provenance notes, with an ex-libris reading ‘Franciscus DE MACHAULT’ and an early autograph signature ‘Ludovicus DE MACHAULT’. In good overall condition internally, given the age of the volume. A very interesting and rare copy of this Parisian edition, edited by Josse Bade and published by Jean Petit, with early handwritten provenance notes.
