Description
16 – COLLECTIVE WORK (P.-J. Stahl, Balzac, Droz, Janin, Musset, Nodier, Sand, etc.): ‘Scenes from the Private and Public Lives of Animals. ’ Paris: J. Hetzel, 1842. 2 large volumes, large 8vo. Frontispieces, illustrations in the text and separate plates by GRANDVILLE. Marginal stains on a few pages and the lower corners of 2 leaves are torn. Black half-basane. Smooth spines of the period, decorated with Romantic motifs, a monkey stamp, scrolls and floral designs. Covers and endpapers later replaced (20th century). Satisfactory condition overall. FIRST EDITION (Both volumes bear the characteristics of the first edition of 1842. The numerous variations noted by Carteret (III, 552–558) between the different states of this edition make it impossible to attribute this copy with certainty to either of the two printings).
