PHILIDOR A.D. The analysis of Chess containing a new method. London, unnamed, 1749. In 8 pl. contemporary binding (worn) smooth spine decorated, headpieces, corners and spines with defects. One of three editions published in the year of the original, this one with the bird finial would be chronologically the third.
François-André Danican Philidor (17261795), a composer from a famous line of musicians, was considered the best chess player of his time, and became famous for his blind simultaneous games. With this work, he established the first systematic treatise on modern chess theory. Thanks to his numerous translations, he exerted a lasting influence throughout Europe and remains a fundamental reference in chess literature. A rare work.
