Description
AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE.— Copies of letters relating chiefly to the American War of Independence, sent to or received by Chevalier des Touches. A collection of some thirty items in 8vo and 4to. Circa 1780.
Archival collection comprising some forty contemporary copies of letters and documents concerning the career of Charles Sochet des Touches (1727–1793), a squadron commander and renowned combatant in the American War of Independence, who was received into the Order of the Cincinnati and was a friend of Washington.
Correspondence with Sartine and the Count of Castries, Ministers of the Navy; with La Fayette; with the Chevalier de la Luzerne, French Minister to the United States; with Washington; etc. A copy of the famous resolution passed by the American Congress on 5 April 1781 thanking him for the victorious battle in Chesapeake Bay.
Originating from the archives of the Chevalier des Touches, some of these documents were featured in the exhibition “Charette, the Man and the Legend” at the Historial de la Vendée in 1996. A modern ink inscription reading ‘Archives de la Baudière’ appears on many of the documents. – Experts: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
