LA GUÉRINIÈRE (François de). School of Cavalry: Covering the Knowledge, Training and Care of the Horse. Paris, Printed by J. Chardon for Huart and Moreau fils, Desaint and Saillant, Durand, Delormel, Pissot, 1751. Folio, 28 x 43.5 cm, 4 folios, 318 pages, 5 folios, contemporary binding in fawn calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, title label, gilt edges. The most famous French work on horsemanship of the 18th century. An expanded edition including a treatise on stud farms. ‘Parrocel’s fine plates lend it particular value.’ (Mennessier de la Lance). Illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece, 24 plates—some double or folded—and 4 large headbands, engraved on copper after Charles Parrocel or Antoine Coquart (for the technical plates): beautiful equestrian portraits, dressage figures, tack, horseshoes, saddlery, and genre scenes. Good condition. From the library of Jules Auban (modern bookplate). Pages slightly yellowed. Binding scuffed and slightly stained; a section of leather missing on the back cover, roughly repaired; headbands and corners restored.
